Sheffield Festive Weekend
Due to ongoing improvements to the infrastructure of the city, it is unfortunately not possible to safely host a Christmas lights switch-on event. However, in its place, there will be a two-day Festive Weekend on Saturday 18th and 19th of November to celebrate Christmas in style. Sheffield’s Festive Weekend will take place on the first weekend of the Christmas Markets to mark the arrival of the season. There will be a weekend of festivities including brass bands, choirs, street dance artists and an outdoor cinema screen which will be showing Christmas films throughout the weekend. Events are all free and unticketed so everyone can enjoy the official beginning of Christmas in Sheffield.
Christmas Market in Sheffield
Alongside the Festive Weekend celebrations, the Sheffield Christmas Markets opens to help you get into the festive spirit. From 16th November until 24 Dec 2023, the city centre is filled with market stalls set against the backdrop of sparkling Christmas lights. We expect an array of seasonal food and drink with unique gift ideas from a whole host of traders, many of them based locally. We’re looking forward to Alpine-themed bars, a traditional German sausage grill, Yorkshire pudding wraps, mulled wine & cider, hot chocolate, churros and many other treats. See Sheffield and the market from the sky, with a ride on the iconic Big Wheel or come and meet the big man himself at Santa’s Grotto. The cabins are open from Sunday-Thursday 10am-6pm & Friday and Saturday 10am-7pm and bars are open 11am-10pm every day.
Disney On Ice
Something about winter makes us want to curl up in front of a fire and watch our favourite Disney movies. This year, Disney’s very special 100 Years of Wonder show Is coming to Sheffield Arena bringing all of your favourite characters to life! Celebrate with Mickey, Minnie, and their Disney friends and relive the adventures of your favourite Disney classics at this amazing ice-skating spectacular. It’s sure to be a magical show, suitable for all ages. The show runs from 30th November to 3rd December and promises to be one to remember. You can also glide your way in and out of the Sheffield Arena when staying at the Leopold Hotel by using the tram service that’s takes you door to door.
Sheffield Cathedral Illuminated
If you can’t go over the top with lights at Christmas, then when can you? Every shop window, home and street in Sheffield has a unique festive style to admire, but nothing as big and bold as the light shows at Sheffield Cathedral. Projection artists Luxmuralis return to the Cathedral this Christmas with another stunning light show every evening between December 5th – 9th. The multi-sensory light-and-sound experience is a huge hit every year and the theme of this year is the nativity story. It’s a beautiful display that has to be appreciated in person. The exterior is free for all to enjoy and you can buy tickets to witness the spectacle of light inside. Sheffield Cathedral is just a one minute walk away from the Leopold so you’re in the best place possible to take in this spectacular view.
Panto in Sheffield
Panto has always been a tradition in England, stretching back to the 1700s! We’re lucky in Sheffield to have a variety of pantos to choose from, from community theatre to large-scale spectacles. The Lyceum becomes home to a tale as old as time from 8th December 2023 until 7th January 2024. Join Belle and her magical friends as they try to escape the mean old Beast, or is he? The show stars Duncan James as Danton and Jennie Dale as Fairy. Another magical Christmas tale will be told in the Crucible from 15th -30th December. A Town Called Christmas tells the story of Clementine and her dreams of a wonderland and how she escapes being lost in a bad dream. It’s ideal for families of all ages and is sure to be a show to remember.
