First World Snooker Championship

1875. Snooker was invented by the British Army in the Indian town of Jubbulpore in 1875. The sport turned professional in the 20th century with the World Professional Snooker Championship 1927 being held for the first time in Camkin’s Hall, Birmingham. The first-ever tournament was won by Joe Davis, who beat opponent Tom Dennis 20-11 to earn a first prize of £6 10s. It was the first professional snooker tournament although the English Amateur Championship has been played annually since 1916.

In 1977, the championship moved to its new home at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, where it has remained ever since. It was deemed suitable by Carol Watterson, wife of legendary promoter Mike Watterson. The 1977 championship featured sixteen competitors: eight seeded players and eight qualifiers. In 2022 Ronnie O’Sullivan became the oldest world champion at 46 years and 148 days.
