Ice Hockey in Sheffield

Sheffield is the first National City of Sport with a range of high-quality facilities originally built for the World Student Games in the city in 1991. One of these arenas was the notorious Utilita Sheffield Arena, home to the city’s elite ice hockey team, the Sheffield Steelers. The Steelers are well-decorated having won dozens of leagues, championships, cups and competitions. The stadium has a capacity of 9,300 but there are often 10,000+ people in attendance for their exhilarating games. The Stadium has been host to some world title boxing matches over the years as well as concerts and gigs from a wide spectrum of arts.

Basketball in Sheffield

The Sheffield Sharks are a professional basketball team that play in the British Basketball League, the top tier of basketball in the UK. The team has been playing for over 25 years and their most recent title was the 2016 BBL Playoff Final Championship where the Sharks defeated the Leicester Riders at the London O2 Arena. They have played in locations all around the city but for the 2023-2024 season, they’re playing in Canon Medical Arena, situated at the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, the first carbon-neutral built arena in the UK. You’ll also catch basketball greats the Harlem Globetrotters on a world tour in Sheffield Arena in 2024.

They have two pools including an Olympic-sized swimming pool with a variety of sessions including 25-metre and 50-metre lane swimming. They have the deepest diving pool in the UK and the International Sports Hall is the largest and most flexible events space in the whole of Sheffield. Dozens of competitions are held here every year including British Swimming meets, Swim England meets, Roller Derby, Karate competitions, Water Polo leagues, Swim Squads, Underwater hockey and so much more. Football in Sheffield

Football is a part of our society and a popular pastime for young and old. Like many large cities in the UK, Sheffield has a couple of formidable professional soccer clubs. The city is home to two league clubs Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United. The world’s oldest football club, Sheffield FC, has recently celebrated its 150th anniversary. Bramall Lane is the home ground of Sheffield United Football Club while Sheffield Wednesday have played in Hillsborough Stadium since 1899. You’ll find amateur and schoolboy leagues playing in local grounds around the city and it’s worth checking out the up-and-coming talent before they are discovered.
