Day Trips from Sheffield

Staying at the Leopold Hotel Sheffield puts you right in the heart of a city known for its industrial past, vibrant culture, and easy access to some of the UK’s most stunning scenery. But while Sheffield itself has plenty to offer, it’s also perfectly placed for exploring the wider region. Whether you’re here for a weekend break or an extended stay, there’s no shortage of great day trips to enjoy.

Here are some of our favourite places to visit within easy reach of the Leopold Hotel Sheffield.

The Peak District – 30 minutes by car

Just a stone’s throw from Sheffield, the Peak District is one of the UK’s most loved national parks. With rolling hills, charming villages, and dramatic landscapes, it’s an ideal escape for walkers, cyclists, or anyone who wants a change of pace.

Spend the day exploring spots like Castleton, with its show caves and historic charm, or walk up Mam Tor for sweeping views over Hope Valley. If you’re more into relaxed strolls and country pubs, head to Bakewell for riverside walks and a slice of the town’s famous pudding.

Getting there: Around 30 minutes by car or an hour by public transport. Bus number 218 takes you to Bakewell and can be accessed from nearby Ponds Forge terminus.

Chatsworth House – 40 minutes by car

Chatsworth House is a must-visit if you enjoy art, architecture, or history. Set in the heart of the Peak District, this grand stately home is the seat of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and features over 30 rooms open to the public, an award-winning garden, a farmyard, and a lovely café.

Wander through the sculpture gallery, take in the view from the cascade fountain, or browse the estate farm shop before heading back to Sheffield.

Getting there: Around 40 minutes by car. Best accessed via taxi or rental.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park – 1 hour by car

Located just outside Wakefield, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park is an open-air gallery that’s home to works by Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Ai Weiwei, and many more. It’s the kind of place where art and nature blend together perfectly.

The park covers over 500 acres, so pack good walking shoes and take your time. There’s also an indoor gallery and a great café if the weather turns.

Getting there: Just under an hour by car from the Leopold Hotel Sheffield.

Eyam – 50 minutes by car

If you’re interested in unique history, Eyam is a small village with a big story. Known as the “plague village,” Eyam voluntarily quarantined itself during the 1665 bubonic plague to prevent it from spreading.

Today, you can visit the local museum, take a walking tour of the village, and learn more about the brave decisions made by its residents. The area is also surrounded by great walking routes and picturesque views.

Getting there: About 50 minutes by car from the hotel.

Hardwick Hall – 1 hour by car

Another stately home worth a visit, Hardwick Hall was built in the 16th century by the formidable Bess of Hardwick. It’s one of the best examples of Elizabethan architecture in the UK and is managed by the National Trust.

Inside, you’ll find grand interiors, large tapestries, and original features. The grounds are equally impressive, with gardens, walking trails, and picnic spots.

Getting there: Just over an hour by car from Sheffield.
