Indoor Activities in Sheffield

If you’re visiting Sheffield in winter, you can still enjoy all of the culture, heritage and fun that’s available all year round, but you’ll have to put up with a little more rain. There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing – so wrap up well and enjoy a day in Sheffield, focusing on the many indoor activities available for groups, couples, and families. If you’ll be spending more time indoors, make sure your accommodation is comfortable and convenient, so you’re not caught in the rain too much. Leopold Hotel Sheffield is a unique hotel in Sheffield located in the heart of the city in a former grammar school so it has plenty of history of its own. National Emergency Services Museum

Our emergency services have long been a part of our heritage and a truly admirable service for our country. If you’ve always been interested in or worked in one of these excellent services, spend a day at the National Emergency Services Museum, located in one of Yorkshire’s first purpose-built combined police, fire & ambulance stations. There are 30 vehicles on display and three floors of exhibits within a stunning historic building. You can climb on board, get dressed up and get hands-on with many of the exhibits, fulfilling a fascination and learning more about how the services work. Exhibitions include life during the Great Fire of London and more about the people who help us.

National Emergency Services Museum is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 10:00 – 16:00.

Tickets are £9.50 for adults and £7.50 for 3-16 year-olds.

Sheffield Winter Garden

A garden feels like the last place to be when it’s raining but Sheffield Winter Garden is different. It is one of the largest temperate glasshouses to be built in the UK and has created a stunning green world in the heart of the city. Next to the Peace Gardens and the Millennium Galleries (both excellent places to visit rain, hail or shine), the Winter Garden is a unique experience for young and old. Inside you can see over 2,500 plants both native and exotic that you may never see in the wild in the UK. The building itself is as large as 5000 domestic greenhouses – 70 metres long and 22 metres high – so it’s easy to spend an afternoon exploring.

Sheffield Winter Garden is open Monday to Saturday 8am to 8pm and Sunday 10am to 5pm.

Admission is free.

National Videogame Museum

There aren’t many family days out where parents will have just as much fun as the kids. That’s only part of what makes the National Videogame Museum so special. Open since 2018, the museum has over 100 games to play, exciting young and old with the most modern consoles and some very special childhood classics. There are themes such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario and 14 different versions of Space Invaders! The Museum allows people to go behind the scenes of UK video game development through their Art of Play exhibition.

Opening Hours vary, please check their website.

Tickets are £12.00 for adults & £9.00 for children.
